No, Democrats cannot shut down the government over Russia investigations.

CNN backed Democratic senator Chris Coons’ plan to shut down the government over the  Russia investigation. Not only is this not possible, it couldn’t be done under the circumstances in the first place. Chris Coons (D-DE) stated that if Republicans in the senate did not conduct investigations into the Russian involvement in the Trump administration, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other democrats would shut down the United States government just as senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) did in the years prior. Only a majority party could shut down the government if they got 50 votes to do so by not approving a budget. Ted Cruz’s Republican party held a majority in the senate, so there was no way to oppose his efforts. Chris Coons in the minority party in the U.S senate, so his efforts can be swiftly stopped by majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) with his override motion authority. CNN quickly began promoting this claim stating “Democrats Plan Government Shut Down” on the morning news programming. This is not possible to do, and CNN’s political commentators should have known that.
